BRE Global’s comprehensive window and door certification services are provided by our highly experienced experts using the world-class facilities at our Watford site. The certification processes vary according to the requirements of the products and standards involved, but most follow the general patter described here.
Gaining certification
In general terms, BRE Global certification is based on assessments of the product and the manufacturer’s quality management system (QMS).
The first step in achieving certification is to complete an Initial Type Test (ITT). This assesses the whole system based on results of testing conducted on carefully selected specimens. Once a system has been shown to meet the requirements, the fabricators submit specimens for a reduced set of tests in order to demonstrate consistency with the original ITT results.
Suppliers wishing to achieve certification must establish, document and maintain a QMS to ensure that the products placed on the market conform to the stated performance characteristics established by the ITT. The QMS will also be assessed by BRE Global.
Certification is granted when all requirements are met, and is maintained by regular audits of both the product and the QMS.
Why gain certification
Third-party certification distinguishes products from their competitors and gives purchasers confidence in their performance. Through a combination of regular product testing and quality management system audits, certification provides independent expert confirmation that the product meets – and will continue to meet – appropriate standards. This benefits both suppliers and purchasers:
Suppliers can demonstrate that their products meet the relevant standards – enabling them to access and sell into new markets – and assure purchasers of their commitment to high quality.
Purchasers can trust third-party certified products to meet set standards, and therefore avoid costly mistakes and reduce risk.
Certification or testing?
While testing provides a ‘snapshot’ of a product’s performance, certification gives assurance of the product’s on-going performance and consistent quality. Testing is nevertheless a valuable tool for generating information that can help with product development, or as evidence that the exact arrangement tested is capable of meeting a required performance level.
