BRE is now offering testing services related to new performance standard PAS 8820, which has been developed for manufacturers, specifiers and designers of concrete containing alkali-activated cementitious material (ACCM*).
Designed to encourage the use of AACMs in the construction industry because of their low carbon and improved fire resistance properties and resistance to chemicals and other aggressive agents, the standard specifies a range of performance and durability requirements that manufacturers of the material need to meet.
To coincide with the introduction of the standard, a new BRE Information Paper entitled Alkali activated binder concrete products: a route-map to standardisation, certification and guidance will shortly be issued detailing the range of different standards and certification that can be applied to AACM. This draws upon BRE’s expertise in the area, providing essential support for those likely to be involved in adopting and using these binders commercially.
Director of Fire and Building Technology Julie Bregulla said ‘Currently 5% of global CO2 arises from traditional cement production. The use oflow carbon cements is key for our industry as it moves towards greener and leaner means of construction in line with the Government’s 2025: Industrial strategy for construction. For take up to be accelerated, robust testing and performance data is key. It also gives our manufacturers export opportunities as the global shift toward green development beds in following COP21 commitments to lowering carbon.’
