My Construction Role Model: William McDonough, Michael Braungart and cities as ecosystems

Having studied climate change and other critical environmental and social issues of the 21st century during my time at university, I knew that my career had to focus on making a positive impact in these fields.

With its huge diversity of expertise and outstanding reputation, BRE seemed like the ideal place to begin the impactful career I desire. I saw the built environment industry as the ideal sphere where I could combine my interests so that I could enact real, tangible change. Since joining BRE, I have had the opportunity to work on a vast array of projects and have further developed interests in fields as diverse as sustainable building design, resilience, the circular economy, biomimicry and future/smart cities.

My #ConstructionRoleModel(s) are William McDonough and Michael Braungart, who captured my imagination with the quote ‘buildings like trees, cities like forests.’ I found the idea that the built environment could be designed like an ecosystem truly inspiring and I now have a vision of the future that I want to help to build. A built environment that: is carbon positive; is powered by the sun and other renewable energy sources; has no concept of waste, where everything is a nutrient for another cycle; and supports a rich diversity of life, promoting the wellbeing of its occupants, human or otherwise. This is what I intend to focus my career on.
