Project summary

About Bybanen Bergen

To achieve a more sustainable and safer city, Bybanen Bergen, are building a light rail. The first phase of the light rail opened in 2010, which consisted of 9,8 km railway and 15 stops. Phase 2 and phase 3 opened 2013 and 2016, and the fourth are opening in 2022/2023. The total length will then be 29 km.

About D11 Sentrum

A ground work contract for building a part of the Bergen City Railroad in Bergen City Center. The work take place in 2 different geographical areas, and includes excavation and fill replacement, new OPI channels and ditches, storm water system, demolishing and moving of some of the infrastructure, and landscaping at city railroad stops. Some of the work has to be done during night, and temporary alteration of roads, pathways and bus stops has to be done to avoid problems for traffic.

The work are performed in the most busy part of Bergen city, being a node for public transport with tourists, commuters and residents, containing historical buildings and cultural relics, residential buildings, hospital, shops and other businesses. In addition to being a densely populated area with sensitive surroundings, several adjacent construction contracts are being performed at the same time.

Achievements

Management

The whole team from FM has kept a high focus on the CEEQUAL certification, both because Bybanen set this as a demand in the contract but also we want to achieve positive impact on the environment from our building process. So we had high focus on new equipment in the building process and also shortest amount of distance for transportation and try to use both gravel, plant and landscape rocks that we first removed in the start of the project back in the building process.

Landscape and Historic Environment

We replanted a lot of bushes and trees and temporary places and brought them back in the project at a later stage.

We use the same solution for the bricks and pavement stones.

Transport

We used a lot of the existing gravel and stones back in the project. We divided the stones from the dirty gravel and we transported the dirty gravel (polluted) to mass storage and we used the clean stones back in the project.

FINANCIAL BENEFITS

Did the use of CEEQUAL deliver any financial benefits?

Lower cost on buying planned new products.

Estimated savings that can be attributed to CEEQUAL.

2% cost reduction

In your view, has CEEQUAL represented value for money?

Yes, absolutely, there is no doubt in my mind that if we would not have focus on this CEEQUAL certification. We wouldn’t achieve all the positive impact that we have done for the environment.

Further information

What were the main challenges for the project and how were these overcome?

The work to register what materials we could reuse in the project was the main challenge.

And find temporary places to store the products without causing trouble with storage of new materials in the project.

What were the drivers and perceived benefits for undertaking a CEEQUAL assessment on this project?

The drivers was that we wanted to achieve higher ranking than GOOD and also the incorporate the work with CEEQUAL into our daily routine.

The benefit is to do whatever we can to keep the environment as good as we can with positive impact on our project planning so we don’t buy new products when we can use what we already have in the area.

How did the use of CEEQUAL influence the outcomes of the project? What was done differently because of the CEEQUAL process?

We had much higher focus on using existing products back in the project. Both plants, trees and stones.

Instead of buying new products we spent time to register what products can we use back despite that it was not new products that it was planned for.

What elements of this project highlight best practice and innovation?

The material efficiency of using existing products and not have to wait for new products. If we had to wait for new products in the period of the project. The covid-19 pandemic would have given us a lot of problems because of much longer time for delivery of many of the products. Such as stones for the landscape work
