Note: This press release is over six months old and the details may have been superseded. Please contact the Press Office for the latest information.

The BRE Trust, the largest independent UK charity focused on research and education in the built environment, has joined the Campaign for Science and Engineering (CaSE).

CaSE was created in 1986* with a mission to raise awareness of the cultural and economic importance of scientific and technological education and development in the UK.

With over 100 member organisations ranging from Astra Zeneca, University College London, Google and the Institute of Engineering and Technology, CaSE works with government to keep science policy and funding at the forefront of the public agenda.

Chairman of the BRE Trust James Wates said, ‘We are delighted to become a member of CaSE and support the organisation’s efforts to raise awareness of science and engineering. BRE shares CaSE’s passion for technological education and development, and by joining we can together with CaSE extend our outreach beyond current networks. We hope that this will enhance the impact that BRE already has in supporting the built environment and also the wider science and engineering community.’

The BRE Trust was created 15 years ago following the privatisation of then Government owned building science centre BRE. The profits made by the companies that make up the BRE brand are gift aided to the Trust which uses the funding to support research and educational programmes that drive transformational change in the built environment – in the homes, buildings, communities and infrastructure that underpin our lives.

Director of CaSE Dr Sarah Main said ‘’I am delighted to welcome the BRE Trust to CaSE. As the UK’s largest built environment charity, the BRE Trust has worked over the last 15 years to advance research and education within the sector. We look forward to expanding our voice to encompass the built environment alongside the wide range of engineering, science and research organisations we represent. The BRE Trust’s membership of CaSE will make our voice in Government all the stronger.’

Since 2001 the Trust has funded 5 Universities Centres of Excellence in Bath, Edinburgh, Strathclyde, Cardiff and Brasilia who conduct research programmes around some the most challenging aspects of the built environment. The Trust has also supported over 100 PhDs, 350 research projects within BRE and released over 300 new guidance publications for the construction and related sectors.

The spend to date of over of £20 million has created significant leverage of more than £30m additional funding from other government and private sources through its university partnerships and its own programmes. This has resulted in over 300 students and more than 100 staff and technicians being supported at its 5 Centres of excellence and BRE extending its collaborations to over 100 individual organisations and companies.
