LPCB assessment for high security windows to Loss Prevention Standard LPS 1270

Security glazing suppliers can help their customers to cut through the confusion of quality and standards compliance claims for security products, by having their glazing units certificated under LPCB’s Intruder resistant security glazing unit scheme.

To gain certification under this scheme, a product’s resistance to intruders is assessed by LPCB to the Loss Prevention Standard LPS 1270. This standard comprises a range of manual intervention tests and can be applied to any glazing product used for windows and doors.

Grades of security rating

LPS 1270 has 1-8 grades of security rating (SR) defined by the array of tools likely to be used by intruders and the time available. Security rating 8 (SR8) represents the highest level of resistance to counter the highest level of risk.

Each product is given three SR numbers, one for each of the glazing’s resistance to:

Local penetration: the glazing’s likely resistance to a hole being made in it – through which a piece of wire or screwdriver, etc can be passed to operate a panic bar or emergency lever handle for example.

Hand hole access: the glazing’s likely resistance to intruders making a hole through they can access the lock or an item of value, etc on the protected side of the glass.

Complete access: the glazing’s resistance to a hole being made in it through which a 400 by 225 mm test block may be passed – replicating the size of a hole a person may be able to pass through.

This grading system enables purchasers to select products and systems which provide the levels of security that match their needs.

Manual and bullet attack standards

LPCB can also certify security glazing to the following standards:

EN 356 – Glass in building. Security glazing. Testing and classification of resistance against manual attack.

EN 1063:2000 – Glass in building. Security glazing. Testing and classification of resistance against bullet attack.
