About BRE
BRE’s purpose is to contribute to a thriving and sustainable world by developing science-led solutions to built environment challenges.
Our expertise is used to tackle today’s toughest global challenges, like climate change, and the safety and security of buildings and infrastructure. We are also an international provider of robust, independent, third-party certification for fire, security and environmental products and services.
Founded in 1921, BRE (the Building Research Establishment) has been raising the standards of the built environment for over a century. BRE started as a government-funded, research-based organisation, and has become an ambitious profit-for-purpose global business. We re-invest the profit we make back into our business, so that we can deliver on our purpose to develop science-led solutions to built environment challenges.

BRE’s expertise in sustainability encompasses the whole life cycle of the construction industry, from planning through to refurbishment or disposal. We created BREEAM, the world’s first sustainability standard for buildings. BREEAM has enabled over a million projects world-wide to reduce their carbon emissions.
Our international LPCB certification schemes for fire and security products provide our customers with a stamp of approval which gives them direct access to trade in 64 countries. These schemes are the most robust and challenging anywhere in the world.
Our range of tools and calculators provide a unique expert insight into all aspects of energy technology, design and management to commercial, public and industrial organisations.
BRE developed the Flood Resilient House and Dementia Friendly House – two demonstration spaces on the Innovation Zone at the BRE Science Park, aimed at showing what can be achieved to mitigate the effects of flooding and to support an ageing population.
As well as fire safety, BRE also provides a range of expertise on the wellbeing of communities within their built environments such as schools, workplaces and homes, including our research into Biophilic offices. BRE runs YellowJacket, the tool to manage health, safety and quality on your site, as part of the SmartSite suite of tools.
Filming for film, TV, and commercial advertising at the BRE Science Park.
The BRE Science Park is regularly used as a location for TV and feature film productions. Ideally located, inside the M25 and close to the M1, only three miles from Leavesden Studios and close to Elstree, BRE’s 50-acre Hertfordshire filming location offers a range of building types, controllable roads, outdoor green spaces and private woodlands.
With everything from a fine Victorian country house to modern engineering test laboratories, our site has been used for commercials, scenes from popular TV soaps, has doubled as Iceland for a major feature film, and been used to host a number of stunt scenes involving pyrotechnics and large vehicle collisions.
Weekday and weekend hires can be accommodated, with the added advantage of plenty of hard standing unit base parking available at weekends. Weekday and night shoots can also be hosted, with level hardstanding available.
