NABERS UK to seek new administrator as BRE moves to focus on BREEAM

The Building Research Establishment (BRE) and NABERS have today announced that BRE is ending its licence agreement for the energy performance rating tool, NABERS UK, in order to focus on its world-leading BREEAM scheme.

Having successfully worked together to launch and operate NABERS UK since 2020, BRE and NABERS are committed to delivering continuity and a smooth transition for NABERS UK. They will work closely together over the coming months to ensure NABERS UK continues to operate during the transition to a new administrator. BRE and NABERS will also continue their collaborative relationship beyond the transition, sharing knowledge and recognising the links between NABERS ratings and the BREEAM credit system.

Further details will be announced over the coming weeks, including details of an Expression of Interest process for a new NABERS UK Administrator and Q&A sessions for scheme stakeholders.

BRE CEO Gillian Charlesworth said:

 NABERS UK is integrated into industry standards and guidance including the BCO Guide to Specification, the RIBA Plan of Works, UKGBC & LETI Energy Use Intensity Targets for Offices, BSRIA Soft Landings and CIBSE’s TM54. NABERS is also utilised by the GLA in its ‘be seen’ energy policy guidance.

NABERS UK was developed to emulate the success of the scheme in Australia, where 90% of office space is rated, with buildings making energy savings of $1.4billion AUD and 9.9 million tonnes of CO2.  The Scheme has gathered significant momentum since its launch in the UK, with the support of many commercial property owners, major industry bodies and the supply chain. As of today over 280 learners have enrolled onto the NABERS UK training course, with 86 NABERS UK licensed assessors currently on board. There are 104 Design for Performance target ratings registered, and 8 office buildings currently registered under the Energy for Offices Scheme.
