Inspiring places: King’s Cross Skip Garden

kcskipThe King’s Cross Skip Garden is a moveable organic vegetable garden located in the middle of one of the biggest development sites in Europe. It has now expanded into a community project which provides opportunities for local young people to encourage positive action in the world through youth leadership training schemes, accredited business and horticulture BTECs and through growing and cooking local food.

Run by Global Generation who focus projects on three independent themes of ‘I, We and The Planet’ the aim of their projects it to instil young people with the confidence to generate change in the business and local community.

The gardens are largely self-sustaining due to the use of organic gardening practices such as aerobic and worm composting, rain water harvesting and bee hives. Much of the food is sold to nearby cafes and restaurants or used in the Skip Garden Café.

Thousands of hands have created the garden with young people working alongside construction and office workers who are also frequent visitors to the garden’s bi-weekly twilight gardening sessions which allows volunteers to get their hands dirty or simply relax in the garden after a long day at work.

The garden also hosts schools visits and runs workshops about sustainability and all things green.
