Three “exceptionally able” leaders join the BRE Trust
“We are delighted to welcome three exceptionally able new Trustees to help give strategic direction to the BRE Trust and its subsidiary companies” said Chair of the BRE Trust, Sir James Wates CBE (Chair of Wates Group), at the Trustees’ Council Meeting today.
He was announcing the appointment of Paul Hetherington, Chief Executive of manufacturing company, C&C Marshall Ltd, Professor Vicky Pope, formerly Head of Science and Technology Futures at the Met Office, and chartered architect Jonathan Rickard, Head of Build at housing provider, Radian.
“Joining seven other highly experienced industry leaders” said Sir James, “the new Trustees will bring complementing skills and knowledge, and play a vital role in managing the BRE Trust’s activities, assets and investments. This will also include developing the objectives of our research and education programme and ensuring excellent scientific standards in the work of BRE and its external partners.”
Sir James was awarded a knighthood in the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours for services to business and charity. The BRE Trust is an independent charity that commissions research, education and demonstration projects to support the development, maintenance and use of better buildings, infrastructure and communities. It also plays a vital role in enhancing the impact that the physical built environment has on the owners, occupiers and surrounding communities.
Brief biographies of the new Trustees who will help to deliver this work are as follows:
Paul Hetherington
Paul Hetherington is the Chief Executive of C&C Marshall, a privately-owned company that manufactures and supplies a comprehensive range of cable management solutions under its Marshall-Tufflex brand.
Paul has much experience of building product manufacture and supply, having worked for well-known manufacturers and merchants/distributors, and held the position of non-executive director of the Builders Merchant Federation. He is a member of the Hastings and Rother Task Force, a strategic-public-community partnership that supports economic growth and regeneration activity, and is also on the Hastings Opportunity Area Partnership Board, which focuses on local and national resources with the common goal of increasing social mobility.
Professor Vicky Pope
Vicky Pope was, until recently taking early retirement, Head of Science and Technology Futures, Met Office Government Services Senior Management Board, and is a Trustee of the Devon Wildlife Trust and In2ScienceUK.
Vicky had a long and successful career in the UK Met Office in a variety of roles – as a climate science researcher, programme manager, communicator of publicly important science, and partnership developer. She is now building a portfolio career that focuses on the issues that she particularly cares about and where she can make a tangible difference. These include protecting and enhancing the environment, improving scientific literacy in decision making and improving access to STEM careers.
Jonathan Rickard
Jonathan Rickard is a chartered architect with more than 30 years’ experience of working both in private practice and, more recently, the regulated housing sector with Radian, an award-winning housing provider operating across the south of England. At Radian he leads their in-house construction programme.
Jonathan is a champion of good design, sustainability and place making, and has been engaged in delivering highly sustainable residential developments. He regularly contributes to the work of housing groups, is a past chair of the RIBA in Hampshire, has been a member of the RIBA housing group, is a Board Member of BCHA, and is a Non-Executive Director of SECBE.
The three new Trustees will join a Trustee Committee currently comprising: Sir James Wates CBE, Chair, Wates Group, June Barnes, Formerly CEO, East Thames Group, Julia Barrett, Director Re-Thinking, Willmott Dixon, Sarah Beale, CEO, Construction Industry Training Board, Francesca Berriman MBE, Chief Executive, Chartered Institute of Architectural Technologists, Phil Wilbraham, Expansion Programme Director, Heathrow, and Gary Wingrove, National Projects and Construction Director, BT Facilities Services.
