Why is civil engineering so important?
BREEAM Infrastructure exists to help drive sustainability and standards across civil engineering projects. Civil engineering projects provide infrastructure on which we all depend – these projects shape and influence the environment in which we live. Modern life as we know it is only possible because of the infrastructure provided by engineering clients, designers, and contractors.
Many projects intrinsically improve both environmental quality and human well-being. These could be waste-water treatment plants and sewerage schemes, city metros and railway projects, or enhancements of public spaces and refurbishment of parks. These are the civil engineering works that mould both our social and environmental landscapes. It is important that these infrastructure projects are properly maintained and improved – this is vital to the project’s sustainable management and its continued capacity to serve society.
What is BREEAM Infrastructure’s role in sustainable civil engineering?
There have been substantial improvements in sustainable engineering in recent years, some of which have been prompted by BREEAM Infrastructure. However, to avoid detrimental environmental effects, civil engineering projects must be managed effectively.
There is substantial pressure to provide sustainable civil engineering projects, to reduce adverse environmental impacts during construction, to improve whole-life performance of projects, and to maximise the benefits of such works. It is also important that schemes are built in line with the appropriate environmental and social performance standards.
BREEAM Infrastructure seeks to address these issues and achieve sustainable engineering projects. It does so by providing an incentive to clients, designers, and contractors to undertake projects that:
– Are demonstrably contributing to more sustainable living
– Are adopting best environmental, economic, and social practice to drive sustainable civil engineering standards
– Are delivering more sustainable engineering, infrastructure, landscaping and public realm works
