The National Botanic Garden of Wales embraces a self-imposed mission to inspire, educate and conserve. After talking with Nancy, the Education Development Officer at the National Botanic Garden of Wales, it quickly became evident the passion which the Garden has for educating the youth of today on the importance of sustainability. The Garden offers tailor made workshops which enables school and community groups of all ages to learn more about the environment. One workshop, ‘What on Earth is Sustainability?’ helps pupils to understand the importance of sustainability, and highlights how our everyday decisions can help to create a sustainable future.
The Garden also provides educational opportunities for the general public. One interesting opportunity is the ‘Green Technologies Trail’. Here visitors can walk around the Garden while stopping to identify a range of environmentally friendly technologies. On the trail visitors can understand how the site generates electricity with the use of wind turbines and solar photovoltaics, or how a biomass furnace ensures that the temperature within the world’s largest single span Glasshouse remains above 9°C (the Great Glasshouse is 110m long!). If you want to learn more about how the actions we take influence our environment, or alternatively if you would like to witness the 8,000 different plant varieties within the Garden, then head to the National Botanic Garden of Wales.
